Position Overview

The Windows System Administrator is responsible for ensuring the stable operation, security, and efficiency of the organisation’s Windows-based systems and servers. This role involves the design, implementation, maintenance, and support of Windows environments, as well as collaborating with other IT teams to deliver reliable and scalable solutions. The Windows System Administrator will play a critical role in maintaining a robust and secure IT infrastructure that supports the organisation’s business operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Windows servers, including hardware and software components, in both physical and virtualized environments.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively address any issues to ensure optimal uptime and responsiveness.
  • Implement security measures, including user authentication, data encryption, and firewall configurations, to safeguard systems and data.
  • Perform regular system backups and ensure disaster recovery plans are up-to-date and tested.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network-related problems in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new solutions, updates, and upgrades to the Windows infrastructure.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access levels to ensure data integrity and security.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and security trends to enhance the organization’s IT capabilities.
  • Automate routine tasks through scripting and configuration management tools to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Maintain documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps for reference and training purposes.

Skills and Attributes

  • Proficiency in Windows Server operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2016, 2019) and Active Directory management.
  • Exposure/Experience within VMware, Veeam backup, SQL Server.
  • Experience administering Exchange Server.
  • SCCM/MECM – Security patching, application updates.
  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, etc.) for task automation and configuration management.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
  • Adaptability to changing technology landscapes and a willingness to learn new skills.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proven experience as a Windows System Administrator or in a similar role.
  • Microsoft certifications such as MCSA, MCSE, or related certifications are desirable.
  • Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing security measures.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and techniques to ensure system performance and availability.
  • Understanding of backup and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of compliance standards (e.g., ACSC Essential 8, HADES, DISP, ISM, ISO 27001, PSPF, DSPF) as they relate to system administration is advantageous.
